Chapter 15 – Magic

Blake’s Viewpoint

I snuck away from the fire while the bodacious heroine was busy inside the diner. Since all of the monsters cleared out so quickly, it was easy to hop in my car and drive off. I returned to the warehouse and factory area, and parked a few blocks from the building that held the power source I felt so strongly.

I opened my trunk and took out my live action role-playing cloak and a staff. If I was going to cast spells, it just felt right to look the part of a wizard, at least to a degree.

I reviewed in my mind what had occurred. I could create a small fire from my hand, and had the ability to do a burst of fiery and force in a circle away from me. My ability to sense magic was stronger than ever.

I needed to test spellcasting. I knew hundreds of spells from the games I played. If I were merely a low-level mage, then I would only be able to do the minor stuff. It didn’t feel minor to me, however, and it was time to play, at least with some nondestructive spells to begin with.

I grasped my staff and licked my lips. Flight would be one of the best powers to have, so I pulled the magic to me. It shifted and flowed, and I felt a sphere around me. When I thought about going up into the air, I lifted off. My cape blew in the breeze, and I went up over the nearest building.

I laughed. This was awesome. Fly was a third level spell. I had to test something higher. I aimed my staff at a fan assembly on top of the warehouse and said, “Cone of Cold!”

Magic coalesced for several seconds, and then ice formed on the staff. After that, a blast of ice and frost blew out in a cone from the end of the staff toward the fan and froze it solid. The motor beneath whined for a moment before I heard a clunk and some smoke came out of the fan. The area around the fan was frozen in a thick sheet of ice.

I grinned. That was a fifth-level spell, and still felt easy, although it took longer than I would have liked to cast. I stared at the ice on my staff. I had items of power, from the voodoo chicken claw to the Indian relic, to the old Celtic symbol. All had power infused in them long before today. Maybe I could infuse power into my staff to make casting faster or easier.

I spent several minutes pulling energy from the area to me, and through me into the staff. It glowed as I worked to imbue it. The magic felt somewhat scarce after the enchantment, and I tried to create a flame above my hand, as I had done the night before.

Fire lit above my hand and floated, but it was redder in color, and felt weaker than before.

I said, “Crap.
